The California Geological Survey's Mineral Resources Program (MRP) provides high-quality information about California's mineral resources and mineral hazards to support the economy, livelihood, and decision making.
The MRP divides its efforts primarily into two areas: Mineral Resources and Mineral Hazards. We share our reports and maps with government agencies, universities, libraries, and the public. Paper reports and maps can be borrowed at most major libraries, or purchased from us, while most newer reports are available in digital formats on this web site, free of charge.
Our Interactive Story of California's Mineral Resources and Mineral Hazards
Since 1880, the California Geological Survey (CGS) has studied, documented, and mapped the state's mineral resources and, more recently, mineral hazards. Both are important to Californians for different reasons; mineral resources are the backbone of the state's infrastructure, and identifying mineral hazards helps mitigate risks to the health and safety of Californians. Scroll through to learn how CGS's Mineral Resources Program is key to the Department of Conservation's commitment to California.
