Inspection Training ​​​​Workshops

Inspections of surface mines must be conducted by an inspector who has a Certificate of Completion of an inspection training workshop on file with the Lead Agency and DMR.  Surface mine inspectors must renew their certificate of completion every five years.  

Description: This free workshop will train lead agency staff on how to observe and document current conditions of surface mining operations for determining compliance with SMARA.  The workshop consists of a full-day of online virtual training (8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).  This is a free workshop.​

The workshop program is based upon content in the Guidance Document for Surface Mine Inspectors​​.  

Topics include: 

  • Inspection requirements
  • Inspection goals and objectives
  • How to prepare for the mine inspection
  • how to conduct the mine inspection   

Target Audience: Designed to train lead agency staff and their consultants who conduct inspections of surface mining operations. These workshops are open to the public, however registration priority is provided to lead agency staff and consultants working for lead agencies that are directly involved in conducting mine inspections. Others will be placed on a waiting list and added as space is available.
