Use the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM)
Data Dashboard to learn about California oil and gas industry production, permitting, incidents, and other information.
The dashboard, linked at the bottom of this page, gleans information from the Well Statewide Tracking and Reporting (WellSTAR) recordkeeping system, which maintains an operational, standardized database for CalGEM to regulate oil and gas operations. Users can search for well data by location, unique well identification number (or “API"), operator, and production field. Customizable charts and tables visually present data that is updated nightly. The dashboard also provides links to CalGEM's online mapping application,
Well Finder, and detailed state well records. More than 99% of drilled wells can be mapped and displayed through Well Finder. The remainder lack reliable GIS coordinates, with some dating back to the late 1800s and permanently sealed to the standards of their time. Information about wells that were permitted but never drilled may be found in the dashboard. But without GIS coordinates, such wells cannot be mapped through Well Finder.
The dashboard can be viewed on all major web browsers.
