Online Data Tools

As part of its regulatory responsibility, CalGEM collects oil, gas, and geothermal data. To support improved electronic data management and transparency,  CalGEM has increased the availability of online data applications in recent years. Below are links to the Department’s primary oil and gas data portals and online data resources available.

Data Platforms and Resources

WellSTAR

WellSTAR is CalGEM’s Well Statewide Tracking and Reporting System. It is a comprehensive electronic database under ongoing development to better handle data collection and analysis, streamline operations and processes, and adhere to requirements in oil and natural gas production:

WellSTAR Dashboard

The dashboard gleans information from the WellSTAR recordkeeping system. Users can search for well data by location, unique well identification number (or “API"), operator, and production field. Customizable charts and tables visually present data that is updated nightly. The dashboard also provides links to CalGEM's online mapping application, Well Finder, and detailed state well records.

Well Finder

Well Finder allows users to locate oil and gas wells and related facilities throughout the state. Search by address, latitude/longitude, unique well number (also known as “API”), Public Land Survey System (PLSS) township/range/section, or by oil and gas field names. Dig deeper into individual well records. Explore where permits have been issued for oil and gas operations. Investigate wells by their type of use, such as oil and gas producers versus injectors.

GIS Mapping Applications

Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping uses spatial (geographical) data to create information-rich maps that benefit understanding, analysis, and decision-making. A GIS system allows multiple categories of data to be selected for representation on a map.
