WellSTAR is the Geologic Energy Management Division's Well Statewide Tracking and Reporting System. It is a comprehensive electronic database under ongoing development to better handle data collection and analysis, streamline operations and processes, and adhere to requirements in Oil and Gas Production: Water Use: Reporting, Senate Bill 1281 (Pavley-2014) and Oil and Gas: Well Stimulation, Senate Bill 4 (Pavley-2013), as well as other state and federal laws.
Accessing WellSTAR
The link above serves members of the public who are not representing a formal
organization.
The link above can be used by representatives of oil and gas companies as well as other entities engaged in regulatory work with the Department of Conservation, e.g., laboratories and other state agencies. Login credentials are required for access. If your organization does not already have access to WellSTAR, follow the instructions below to request it.
Establishing A New Organization With WellSTAR Access:
Fill out the OG150 Form and the WellSTAR Operator Administrator Form and email them to wellstar@conservation.ca.gov. Note: while oil and gas operators must fill out the entire OG150 Form, organizations other than oil and gas operators only need to fill out the first page. Department of Conservation staff will review the request and create the organization in WellSTAR. Once the organization is created in WellSTAR, you will receive an email with your username and temporary password.
Accessing Well Finder
The link above provides instructions on how to access and use Well Finder. Well Finder is a well-search tool that displays maps and other information about oil and gas wells and their associated facilities throughout California. A user can search by address, oil and gas field names, latitude/longitude, unique well number (also known as “API”) or Public Land Survey System (PLSS) section/township/range.
