Natural Gas Working Group

The Governor created the Natural Gas Working Group during the winter of 2000-2001 under the leadership of Mary Nichols, Secretary for Resources, to investigate California’s natural-gas market. The Working Group was tasked with ensuring that everyone in government gets an accurate overview of the current situation—the anticipated need for natural gas, the actual supplies that are available, and the status of improvements to pipelines and other parts of the natural gas infrastructure that need to be completed for the system to work properly. To fulfill this requirement, updates addressing these and other natural gas issues are prepared and circulated to the appropriate governmental agencies.

Altogether seven state agencies form the Natural Gas Working Group, as follows:

  • California Energy Commission

  • California Public Utilities Commission

  • Department of Conservation’s Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources

  • State Lands Commission

  • California Air Resources Board

  • Department of Water Resources

  • Department of General Services
