On February 20, 2004, the California
Earthquake Prediction Evaluation Council
met to review an earthquake prediction
for southern California made by
Professor Vladimir Keilis-Borok of UCLA.
The Council is a body of scientists who
advise the Governors Office of
Emergency Services on the validity of
earthquake predictions and on the
likelihood of future earthquakes in
California. Click
here for the Councils report to OES.
The Council neither validated nor
invalidated the prediction. The
scientists felt that there was
insufficient theoretical basis for a
valid prediction and an insufficient
track record for a statistical
validation. The Council did, however,
recognize the efforts of the scientists
as an area of research that could lead
to future success in earthquake
prediction.
