Department of Conservation -- Director's Message

A Message From the Director

DOC Director Bridgett Luther
Bridgett Luther, Director

Nothing is more fundamental to California's history and future than its land. That was true in 1848, when James Marshall found a precious, shiny mineral that led to the Gold Rush. And it is true today, whether the subject is mining, agriculture, fuel and minerals production, geologic phenomena or even litter abatement.

How we respond to land-use questions today will shape the California of tomorrow. The answers we find must ensure the safety of the citizenry, the vitality of the economy and the health of the environment.

As the nation's leading agricultural state, California must find ways to preserve its fertile soil and, at the same time, make room for a growing population.

As a leading producer of mineral commodities, oil, natural gas and geothermal steam, we must ensure that development of these resources is accompanied by environmental safeguards.

As a land of unique and sometimes dangerous geology, we must construct buildings and communities with a high degree of protection against earthquakes and landslides.

As a pacesetter in the development of a nationwide beverage container recycling ethic, California must maintain a recycling program that continues to keep containers off of roadsides and out of landfills.

With its vast natural resources and scenic beauty, California truly is a land of plenty. Each of us plays an important role in keeping it that way for this and future generations.
