Jason Marshall has served as Chief Deputy Director of the California Department of Conservation  since 2005. Mr. Marshall serves as the Director's second in charge, overseeing all policy and program operations of the DOC.   Consistent with the Director's vision, Marshall directs the policy and programs of the DOC divisions and legal, legislative outreach, and public affairs functions.

Mr. Marshall has worked for the DOC since 1991.   Immediately prior to his tenure as Chief Deputy Director, he served 11 years as the DOC Legislative Director, heading up the  Office of Governmental and Environmental Relations.   As the DOC's principal negotiator for policy matters, he led or played a significant role in efforts to increase the amount paid to consumers for recycling;  establish California's first incentive program for plugging orphaned oil and gas wells;  improve enforcement tools for the California Land Conservation (Williamson) Act and for the Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Program; strengthen California's mine reclamation law for both active and abandoned mines; and establish a processing fee structure that rewards beverage manufacturers for higher recycling rates.

Mr. Marshall is a graduate of Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California.   He is also a certified Emergency Medical Technician working for both the Sierra-at-Tahoe Ski Patrol as well as for a local emergency responder in Sacramento.   Mr. Marshall, his wife and their two daughters reside in Sacramento.
