Range A—salary $2921- 3550/ month, probationary period of 1 year
Range B—salary $3461- 4207/month

The Recycling Specialist I classification is used in nearly all of the Division of Recycling's branches and therefore is used for a wide range of duties. Generally, RS Is assist in responsible, professional work of average difficulty where policies and procedures are already established. Some positions in this classification may travel statewide, providing the   opportunity to work out of one of three DOR field offices located in Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Diego. The duties oftentimes involve research and analysis as well as assisting program participants in complying with the California Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act and the associated California Code of Regulations.

The types of programs that use the Recycling Specialist I classification are:

  • School and community educational outreach programs.

  • Inspecting and training the employees of retail stores and recycling centers statewide to ensure compliance with recycling laws and regulations.

  • Registering and training beverage manufacturers and distributors on program aspects and monitoring their program-related transactions.

  • Conducting investigations of fraudulent activities.

  • Mapping locations of convenience zones and recyclers.

  • Conducting research studies, analyzing data and developing reports to determine various recycling rates, aid enforcement efforts, and improve legislative efforts for program refinement.

  • Expanding the markets for recycled content products.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Minimum qualifications for admittance into the Recycling Specialist I exam

The minimum qualifications for the Recycling Specialist I classification are as follows:

Either 1
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a recognized college with  any major but preferably with specialization in physical or natural sciences; environmental studies including ecology; resource management or conservation; economics; or a related field.   (Additional qualifying experience in recycling and/or waste management, regulations, analysis, research; or resource recovery may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)   (Registration as a senior in recognized institution will admit applicants to the examination, but they must produce evidence of graduation or its equivalent before they can be considered eligible for appointment.)

Experience: Six months of experience in California state service performing recycling and/or waste management duties in a class with a level of responsibility equivalent to that of a Management Services Technician, Range B, and   Education: 12 semester units of college in the areas specified.
