California Geological Survey (CGS) believes that there is a need to increase public awareness and understanding of the importance of the earth sciences in our lives, that is why CGS provides educational resources for teachers and others who are interested with the hope to make earth science learning more meaningful. Much of our educational resource material is in PDF format and requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.
CGS notes contain the answers to commonly asked questions about California's geology. There are also notes with information on
California's state gem (benitoite),
state fossil (sabertoothed cat),
state mineral (gold), and
state rock (serpentine).
Teacher Features, a regular feature of CALIFORNIA GEOLOGY magazine, are intended for use by educators in the classroom.
The California Geological Survey produces several types of maps and publications, many of which are online. Visit our
Maps and Data page to start exploring the collection of maps.
