Map Explanation for the Seismic Hazards
3-D Animation of the Los Angeles Area


The animated 3-D model shows colored earthquake hazard zones super-imposed upon a light gray and green shaded relief map of the Los Angeles Basin. The earthquake faults, as well as areas more likely to be affected by an earthquake-induced landslides, and the areas more likely to be affected by earthquake-induced ground failure, known as liquefaction, are separately color-coded on the 3-D map.

Seismic Hazard Zones

  • Yellow areas are zones of potential liquefaction
  • Red areas are zones of potential landslides
Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zones
  • Solid black areas are Alquist-Priolo earthquake fault zones where future ground displacement could occur along active faults. Heavy black lines are additional active faults that have significant earthquake potential.

NOTE:  The colors depicted on this 3-D model for potential landslide and liquefaction differ from the colors on the official Seismic Hazard Maps as seen on the California Geological Survey (CGS), Seismic Hazard Zonation Program website.  Official color for liquefaction is green and landslides is blue.
